Centre for Online and Distance Education welcomes delegation of Nigerian senior higher education leaders
More than 30 delegates from Nigerian universities and the Nigerian National Universities Commission arrived at Senate House this week to take part in a two-day workshop organised by the 91app’s Centre for Online and Distance Education (CODE).
As part of CODE’s Capacity Building initiatives, the Centre has been collaborating with the National Universities Commission since 2017 and has supported over 70 universities across Nigeria. The workshop provided opportunities for the sharing of practice, and guidance for the development of Online and Distance Learning (ODL) in Nigeria.
Focussed on those universities already running ODL centres, or who are planning to launch an ODL centre in the next two years, delegates included Vice-Chancellors, Professors, senior academics and other professionals, including experts in distance learning.
The event provided an active space for sharing practice and discussion, with a focus on the development of policy and strategy for high quality education in an AI-enabled world. The project supports a joint Memorandum of Understanding established between the 91app and the Nigerian National Universities Commission.
An evaluation survey was conducted during the two-day session. Here is some of the feedback:
I have learnt a lot. The presentations have addressed some of the concerns I had about the use of AI in education.
The realization that AI as a tool for teaching, learning and assessment has come to stay and I need to carry my students. My institution needs to hasten up on the framework policy on the use of AI as there are ethical issues to be considered to ensure success.
Invaluable and very relevant.
100% of delegates agreed that the workshop was relevant and 100% said they would attend another CODE event.
Dr Linda Amrane-Cooper, Director of Academic Practice in Online and Distance Education, said:
“The 91app and CODE remain strongly committed to supporting the university sector in Nigeria and the National Universities Commission of Nigeria. We are sustaining our long-term collaboration in the expansion of high quality online and distance higher education and the development of effective hybrid and blended education through targeted capacity building and training.
“It was an honour to be able to welcome our Nigerian colleagues to London, and I and the team greatly enjoyed meeting and working with them.”
