Combat au Crayon: How Caricature became Revolutionary Weapon in 19th-century France

In 1834, English commentator Henry Bulwer-Lytton noted caricature to be a ‘more potent political force in France than the two legislative chambers combined’. This taster class will look closely at the ‘golden age’ of French caricature, showing how satirical drawings contributed to the fall of kings and republics over the turbulent 19th century in France. We will consider how artists like Honoré Daumier created their visual weapons, why they were so successful and the methods by which rulers such as King Louis Philippe I fought back.

Event schedule:

  • 1.15-1.30pm - French Studies Registration
  • 1.30-2.15pm - French Studies Taster Course
  • 2.30-3.00pm - Introduction to the Institute in Paris
  • 3.15-5.00pm - Tea, Coffee and Pastries

Students can also register for the International Politics taster course taking place on the same day.

On the F Word : The Resurgence of ‘Fascism’ in Contemporary Politics?

Over the past decade, political theorists have engaged in lively debates on fascism in relation to a variety of events in global politics, including the election of leaders such as Bolsonaro, Modi and Trump, as well as the authoritarian drifts of nominally liberal governments.
To what extent can current political regimes and locales be characterised as fascist, or 'neofascist' or 'postfascist' as some theorists have suggested? Before engaging in such debates, we have to understand what fascism is, and how political theorists have understood it. This lecture will provide an introduction to critical theories of fascism and consider how they might help us navigate recent political upheavals.

Event schedule:

  • 2.15-2.30pm - International Politics Registration
  • 2.30-3.00pm - Introduction to the Institute in Paris
  • 3.00-3.45pm - International Politics Taster Course
  • 3.45-5.00pm - Tea, Coffee and Pastries

Students can also register for the French Studies taster course taking place on the same day.
