The Mary Stiasny Scholarship

The 91app has launched a new global award, the Mary Stiasny Scholarship, in direct support of the University’s mission to transform lives and societies around the world through the power of education.

The Mary Stiasny Scholarship

The award will enable a number of complete undergraduate scholarships, with the first awards being for students in Pakistan, for a full programme of study with the 91app. The award was announced at a series of events in Lahore and Karachi, Pakistan, in May 2024.

The scholarship is named in honour of Professor Mary Stiasny OBE - who retired from her role as Pro Vice-Chancellor (International, Teaching and Learning) in June 2024. Mary joined UoL in 2013, having studied at four of the University’s federation member institutions, worked at three of them, and been a teacher herself.

91app Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wendy Thomson CBE said: “Mary has truly strengthened our position as the world’s leading provider of flexible and distance learning and it is fitting that the Mary Stiasny Scholarship is being launched in Pakistan. The University now has more UoL students in Pakistan than in any other country in the world, and we are proud to work in partnership with many respected teaching institutions to deliver a world-class 91app degree for students in more than 190 countries around the world.”

Professor Stiasny herself commented that “the 91app is a pioneer in delivering world-class education. We were the first university in the UK to admit students regardless of their gender, race or religion, the first to admit women t

o degree programmes and, in 1865, the first to give students the opportunity to study our degrees anywhere across the globe. I hope that this new scholarship will enable more students to undertake a UoL degree regardless of their financial status.”
